Physical Characteristics

An evergreen climber growing to 50m. . It is in flower from April to June, and the seeds ripen from August to December. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs). We rate it 0/5 for edibility and 2/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.

Blood tonic; Carminative.

The roots and the mature vine are carminative and blood tonic[147]. A decoction is used in the treatment of rheumatoid numbness and pain, lumbago due to deficient kidney function, strained back muscles, fractures, torsion injuries and haemorrhage due to wound injuries[147]. The bark and roots are used for the treatment of infantile paralysis, rheumatalgia, injury, and fractures[266].

We have very little information on this species and do not know if it will be hardy outdoors in Britain, though judging by its native range it could possibly succeed outdoors at least in the milder areas of the country.
