Physical Characteristics

Biennial growing to 0.5m. . The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects. We rate it 1/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils, requires well-drained soil and can grow in heavy clay soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It requires moist soil.

Leaves Root.

One report says the plant is a vegetable but does not say what part of the plant is used[105]. Judging by other members of this genus, it is likely that the root and the young shoots can be eaten.

Cultivation details

We have very little information on this species and do not know if it will be hardy in Britain, though judging by its native range it should succeed outdoors in many parts of the country. The following notes are based on the general needs of the genus.
Succeeds in ordinary garden soils, including heavy clays[200].

Propagation

Seed - sow spring in situ. Make sure to water the seed in if the weather is dry.
