Physical Characteristics

An evergreen perennial Climber. . It is in leaf all year, in flower in May, and the seeds ripen from October to November. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs). We rate it 0/5 for edibility and 1/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.

The roots are anodyne, antiphlogistic, depurative and febrifuge[147]. A decoction is used internally, or the mashed root is used as a poultice, in the treatment of laryngitis, dysentery, boils and abscesses, poisonous snakebites[147].
