Known Hazards:	Although no mention of toxicity has been seen for this species, it belongs to a genus that contains a number of plants with a cumulative poisonous effect on the liver[65]. Some caution is advised.
Range:	Circumboreal. Formerly native to Britain, now apparently extinct[17].
Habitat:	Fen ditches[17].

Physical Characteristics

Annual/Biennial growing to 0.6m. It is hardy to zone 4. It is in flower from June to July, and the seeds ripen from July to August. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Bees and flies. We rate it 1/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy) and medium (loamy) soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist or wet soil.

Leaves.

Young leaves and flowering stems - raw or cooked[177, 257]. They have been eaten raw in salads, cooked as greens or have been fermented into a sauerkraut[257]. Some caution is advised, see the notes above on toxicity.

Cultivation details

Requires a gritty, moisture-retentive but well-drained circumneutral soil and a sunny position[200].
Plants can be short-lived in cultivation[200].

Propagation

Seed - sow spring or late summer in situ. Only just cover the seed and make sure the soil remains moist to enable germination to take place.
