Physical Characteristics

Perennial growing to 1m. It is hardy to zone 6. It is in flower from June to July. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects. We rate it 1/5 for edibility and 1/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and requires well-drained soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It requires moist soil. The plant can tolerate maritime exposure.

Cultivation details

Requires a gritty, moisture-retentive but well-drained circumneutral soil and a sunny position[200].

Propagation

Seed - sow spring in a greenhouse. Only just cover the seed and make sure that the compost does not dry out. Prick out the seedlings into individual pots when they are large enough to handle, over-wintering the young plants in the greenhouse for the first year and then planting them out in late spring[200].
