Physical Characteristics

Perennial growing to 0.6m. . The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs). We rate it 0/5 for edibility and 2/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.

Depurative; Febrifuge.

The roots and leaves are depurative and febrifuge[147]. A decoction is used in the treatment of epidemic mumps, sore throat, erysipelas and fever-caused rashes[147].

The plant yields a blue dye[1, 146]. The part used is not specified[K].

Cultivation details

This species is not very cold tolerant and generally requires greenhouse treatment in Britain[1].
