Physical Characteristics

Annual growing to 1.2m. It is hardy to zone 3 and is not frost tender. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Wind. We rate it 2/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and requires well-drained soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It requires moist soil and can tolerate drought.

Seed.

Seed - cooked[105]. Used as a cereal for making bread, cakes, thickening soups and so on[K].

Cultivation details

We have very little information on this species but it should succeed as an annual crop in Britain. It might be possible to sow it as an over-wintering annual.
Succeeds in most soils but prefers a well-drained light soil in a sunny position[1].

Propagation

Seed - sow March or October in situ and only just cover the seed. Germination should take place within 2 weeks.
