Physical Characteristics

An evergreen shrub. . The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs). We rate it 1/5 for edibility and 1/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.

Fruit; Seed.

Fruit - raw or cooked[144, 157, 167]. It can be dried for later use[157].
Seed. Oily and nutritious, but not very palatable[144, 154, 167].

Provides a liniment for use on sores, boils etc[154].

Friction sticks; Tannin; Wax; Wood.

The bark contains up to 18% tannin[154].
The seed is rich in oil and burns like a candlenut[144, 154].
Wood - hard, heavy, close-grained. It is used for making furniture etc[154]. The wood is oily and makes a god friction stick for making fire[167].
