Physical Characteristics

An evergreen shrub growing to 3m. It is frost tender. It is in flower in May. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs). We rate it 0/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.

The plant makes a fairly useful screen[156].
The fibrous inner bark has been used to make cordage[156].

Cultivation details

Succeeds in most soils and situations in Australian gardens[157].
This species is hardy to about -7°c in Australian gardens[157], though this cannot be applied directly to British gardens due to our cooler summers that often fail to fully ripen new shoots, and our longer, colder and wetter winters[K].
