Physical Characteristics

Annual/Perennial growing to 0.7m. . It is in flower from April to November, and the seeds ripen from May to November. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Bees, flies and beetles. The plant is self-fertile. We rate it 1/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and requires well-drained soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It requires moist soil.

Cultivation details

We have virtually no information on this species or its hardiness in Britain, though judging by its native range it is likely to succeed outdoors in most parts of the country. It is usually an annual plant, though is sometimes a short-lived perennial[266]. It is likely to succeed in an acid or calcareous sandy or gritty well-drained soil in a sunny position.

Propagation

Seed - sow spring or autumn in situ. Germination usually takes place within 2 - 3 weeks at 15°c[164].
