Physical Characteristics

Perennial growing to 0.6m. . It is in flower from June to August, and the seeds ripen from July to September. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs). We rate it 1/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.

Edible Uses

Fruit[105, 177]. The fruit, which is enveloped in its calyx, is about 10mm in diameter[266].

This species has mistakenly been treated in various floras as Physaliastrum japonicum (Franchet & Savatier)
Honda, which is a different species found only in Japan[266].
