Physical Characteristics

A decidious shrub growing to 0.5m. It is hardy to zone 8. It is in flower from June to August. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects. We rate it 1/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and requires well-drained soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It requires dry or moist soil.

The plant is sometimes used to adulterate sage, Salvia officinale[177, 183].

Cultivation details

Requires a well-drained dry soil in full sun[187] with shelter from cold winds[200].
Plants are hardy to about -10° c[187].
The plant spreads by means of underground suckers[187].
Plants in this genus are notably resistant to honey fungus[200].

Propagation

Seed - sow spring in a greenhouse and only just cover the seed. Germinates quickly. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts.
Division in spring or autumn[200].
