Physical Characteristics

Perennial growing to 1.5m. It is hardy to zone 6. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects. The plant is self-fertile. We rate it 0/5 for edibility and 1/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It requires moist soil.

Cultivation details

An easily grown plant, it succeeds in any moisture-retentive soil in a sunny position[200].
Suitable for group plantings in the wild garden[200].
This species was formerly cultivated as a medicinal plant[61].

Propagation

Seed - we have no information on this species but suggest sowing the seed in a cold frame as soon as it is ripe if this is possible otherwise in early spring. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer.

Excellent and very comprehensive, though it contains a number of silly mistakes. Readable yet also very detailed.

Details of over 1,200 medicinal plants of China and brief details of their uses. Often includes an analysis, or at least a list of constituents. Heavy going if you are not into the subject.
