Physical Characteristics

Annual growing to 0.15m. . It is in flower from May to October, and the seeds ripen from June to October. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs). We rate it 0/5 for edibility and 2/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.

The entire plant is used in Tibetan medicine, it is said to have a bitter and astringent taste with a cooling potency[241]. Diuretic and febrifuge, it also removes any excess accumulation of body fluids[241]. It is used in the treatment of inflammation of the liver or gall bladder, seminal/vaginal discharges, oedema and disorders associated with alcoholism[241]. A decoction of the plant is used as a wash for diseased skin[272].
