	Order: Asterales. Renamed to Asteraceae -- Aster family

Physical Characteristics

Annual growing to 0.5m. . The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs). We rate it 1/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.

Edible Uses

Fruit Leaves.

Leaves and young shoots - cooked[105, 177].
The roasted fruits are pickled[272].

Cultivation details

We have very little information on this species and do not know if it will be hardy in Britain. However, judging by its native range, it is likely to succeed outdoors in many areas of the country.

Propagation

Seed - sow spring in sheltered conditions and plant out in late spring. If sufficient seed is available then the seed can probably be sown outdoors in situ in the spring[K].
