Physical Characteristics

Perennial growing to 0.9m. It is hardy to zone 7. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects. We rate it 0/5 for edibility and 1/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils, requires well-drained soil and can grow in nutritionally poor soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It requires dry or moist soil.

The dried plant, combined with mullein (Verbascum species) has been smoked in the treatment of craziness and fits[257].

The plant was collected by the Hopi Indians, dried and mixed with wild tobacco and used in rain-making ceremonies[187].

Cultivation details

Requires a well-drained soil and a position in full sun[187].
Plants are hardy to about -15° c[187].

Propagation

Seed - sow spring in a greenhouse. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts
