Physical Characteristics

Annual growing to 0.3m by 0.15m . It is hardy to zone 5 and is not frost tender. It is in flower from May to August, and the seeds ripen from July to August. The scented flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Bees. It is noted for attracting wildlife. We rate it 0/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and requires well-drained soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It requires moist soil.

Cultivation details

Succeeds in any soil, including sandy soils[108]. Prefers a fertile well-drained soil[188]. Prefers an open sunny position and a cool root run, doing well by concrete paths, rocks etc[108, 200].
The flowers diffuse a gentle sweet perfume that is most pronounced on a calm warm day[245].
A very good bee and hoverfly plant[1, 24, 164].
Plants usually self-sow freely[188].

Propagation

Seed - sow spring or autumn in situ[134]. Germination takes place within 3 weeks.
