Physical Characteristics

An evergreen shrub growing to 3m. . The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs). We rate it 1/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and requires well-drained soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.

Wood - hard and tough. Used for making tool handles, in cabinet making etc[154].

Cultivation details

Requires a well-drained humus-rich soil and a cool root run[157]. Plants prefer some shade in Australian gardens[157], though are likely to require full sun in Britain[K].
This species tolerates temperatures down to about -7°c in Australian gardens[157], though this cannot be applied directly to British gardens because of the cooler summers, that can often fail to fully ripen new growth, and the longer, colder and wetter winters[K]. This plant generally requires cold greenhouse treatment in Britain[1].
