Physical Characteristics

Annual growing to 0.9m. . The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs). We rate it 1/5 for edibility and 2/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.

Edible Uses

Leaves.

Tender leaves and young shoots - cooked. Used as a pot herb[145, 177, 272].

Medicinal Uses

Antiperiodic Skin Styptic.

A decoction of the plant is used in the treatment of malarial fever[272]. A paste of the plant is boiled with mustard oil and applied externally to boils[272]. The juice of the plant is used in the treatment of urinary complaints[272].
The dried inflorescences are smoked and the smoke exhaled through the nose to treat nosebleeds[272].

We have very little information on this species and do not know if it will succeed outdoors in Britain.
