Physical Characteristics

Climber. . The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs). We rate it 1/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.

Fruit - cooked[144]. it is usually roasted and the seeds are sometimes rejected[144]. The ovoid fruit is 4 - 8cm long[265].

Cultivation details

We have very little information on this species and do not know if it will succeed outdoors in Britain, though judging by its native range if it is hardy then it is only likely to be so in the mildest areas of the country. The plant is likely to require a warm, very sunny position and a well-drained soil.
