Habitat:	Heavy soils, vernal pools, low alkaline fields, hillsides etc, especially in grassland and alkaline marshes, to 1300 metres[71].

Physical Characteristics

Annual growing to 0.3m. . It is in flower from May to July. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects. We rate it 1/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils, requires well-drained soil and can grow in nutritionally poor soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils and can grow in very alkaline soil. It cannot grow in the shade. It requires moist soil.

Seed.

Seed - raw or cooked. The seed can be parched and eaten dry or made into a powder and eaten dry or cooked like a porridge[105, 161, 257].

Cultivation details

An easily grown plant, succeeding in any well-drained soil, including nutritionally poor ones[200]. It prefers a sunny position[200]. Another report says that it requires a moderately good garden soil and a warm sheltered position[1].
An annual plant, germinating in the autumn and growing through the winter in California[71].
A second flowering can be obtained from plants if they are trimmed back after flowering and before setting seed[200].

Propagation

Seed - sow early to mid spring in situ[1, 200].
Seed can also be sown in situ in early to mid autumn but this sowing will normally require some protection from winter cold[1, 200].
