Physical Characteristics

Perennial growing to 1.2m. . The scented flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects. The plant is self-fertile. We rate it 2/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils and can grow in very alkaline soil. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.

The stem[183] and the seed[2, 105, 177] are said to be edible though no further details are known.
The water in which the leaves have been cooked is drunk as a wine and is very refreshing[183].
The seed is used as a condiment[183].

Cultivation details

We have very little information on this plant and do not know if it will be hardy in Britain, though judging by its native range it should succeed outdoors in most areas of the country.
It is likely to prefer a well-drained calcareous soil.

Propagation

Seed - we have no information on this species but suggest sowing the seed in spring in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts.
Division could be tried in the spring.
