Physical Characteristics

An evergreen shrub. It is frost tender. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs). We rate it 1/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It requires moist soil.

Requires a sunny, very well-drained position[157].

This species is hardy to about -7° c in Australian gardens[157], though this cannot be transferred direct to British gardens due to our cooler summers that often fail to fully ripen the wood, plus our longer, wetter, colder winters[K]. Plants require cool greenhouse treatment in Britain[1]. They succeed outdoors on the Isles of Scilly.
