Order: Asterales. Renamed to Asteraceae -- Aster family

Physical Characteristics

Perennial growing to 0.5m. It is hardy to zone 6. It is in flower from August to September. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects. We rate it 0/5 for edibility and 1/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and requires well-drained soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.

Poultice Stomachic.

A decoction of the root is cordial[240]. It is given in the treatment of colic and puerperal fever[240]. The juice of the roots is used in the treatment of fevers[272]. The bruised root is applied as a poultice to eruptions[240].

Other Uses

Incense.

The root extract is used as an incense[145]. The plant is used for incense[272].

Cultivation details

Succeeds in any ordinary soil in a sunny position[200].

Propagation

Seed - we have no information on this species but suggest sowing the seed in a cold frame as soon as it is obtained. Only just cover the seed. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts.
