Physical Characteristics

Perennial growing to 1m. It is hardy to zone 7. It is in flower in June. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects. We rate it 0/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and requires well-drained soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It requires moist soil.

A blue dye is obtained from the leaves[169].

Cultivation details

Prefers a well-drained fertile soil in a sunny position[14, 200]. Succeeds in ordinary garden soil[1].

Propagation

Seed - sow spring or autumn in situ or in an outdoor seedbed[200].
If seed is in short supply then it might be better to sow it in a cold frame in the spring. Prick out the seedlings into individual pots when they are large enough to handle, and plant out in early summer.
