Physical Characteristics

Biennial growing to 0.3m. It is hardy to zone 7. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects. We rate it 1/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It requires moist soil.

Cultivation details

Thrives in a rich fertile moisture-retentive soil in full sun[200].

Propagation

Seed - sow early spring in a greenhouse and only just cover the seed. Prick out the seedlings when they are large enough to handle into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for their first winter. Plant them out in late spring or early summer of the following year.
Division in spring.
