Physical Characteristics

Perennial growing to 0.6m by 0.3m . It is hardy to zone 7. It is in flower in June, and the seeds ripen in August. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects. We rate it 2/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and requires well-drained soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It requires dry or moist soil and can tolerate drought.

Edible Uses

Leaves.

Young leaves - raw[177]. Used as a cress in salads[2, 183].

Cultivation details

Prefers a hot dry well-drained soil in a sunny position[1, 200].

Propagation

Seed - sow early spring in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in late spring.
If you have sufficient seed then it is worth making an outdoor sowing in situ in the middle of spring.
