Habitat:	Thickets and open wood margins, especially near streams in Sichuan[109]. Forests in valleys at elevations of 900 - 3600 metres[266].

Physical Characteristics

A decidious tree growing to 9m. It is hardy to zone 6. It is in flower in May, and the seeds ripen from August to September. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs). We rate it 1/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.

Woodland, Secondary, Dappled Shade.

Leaves.

Cultivation details

Prefers an open moderately rich free soil[1] and full sun[200]. Grows well in an open situation in a woodland garden or shrub border[200].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a cold frame[200]. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts.
