Physical Characteristics

Biennial/Perennial growing to 0.6m. It is hardy to zone 7. It is in flower from July to August. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs). It is noted for attracting wildlife. We rate it 2/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils, requires well-drained soil and can grow in nutritionally poor soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.

Tender young shoots and leaves - cooked as a vegetable[272].

Cultivation details

Prefers a position in full sun in a circumneutral soil[200]. Succeeds in ordinary garden soils, tolerating poor and dry soils[200].
Plants are short-lived perennials and are often biennial[200].
A good nectar source for butterflies[200].

Propagation

Seed - sow spring or late summer in situ. Germination should take place within 3 weeks.
