Physical Characteristics

A decidious tree growing to 6m. It is hardy to zone 7. It is in flower in June. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs). We rate it 1/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils, requires well-drained soil and can grow in nutritionally poor soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It requires moist soil. It can tolerate atmospheric pollution.

Cultivation details

Prefers a humus-rich well-drained soil in full sun[200]. Tolerates poor soils and atmospheric pollution[200]. Requires shelter from cold north and east winds[200].
Plants are hardy to between -10 and -15° c[200].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in the autumn in a cold frame or greenhouse[200]. Sow stored seed in late winter in a cold frame. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts.
