Physical Characteristics

Perennial growing to 0.1m by 1m . It is hardy to zone 7. It is in flower from May to October, and the seeds ripen from July to October. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects. The plant is self-fertile. We rate it 1/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and requires well-drained soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It requires moist soil.

Fruit - raw or cooked[61, 177]. The fruit has the appearance and texture of a strawberry but very little flavour[K].

Cultivation details

We have very little information on this species and do not know if it will be hardy in Britain. Judging by other members of this genus it probably prefers a moist but well-drained soil in a sunny position and grows well in a rock garden.
This species is cultivated for its edible fruit in China[61].

Propagation

Seed - sow spring in a sunny position in a greenhouse. Germination usually takes place within 1 - 6 weeks or more at 15° c. A period of cold stratification may speed up germination. When large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer.
Division of runners in spring or late summer. Very easy, they can be planted out straight into their permanent positions.
