Physical Characteristics

Biennial/Perennial growing to 0.35m. . It is in flower from June to July. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs). We rate it 1/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland). It requires moist or wet soil.

Bog Garden, Woodland, Dappled Shade, Shady Edge.

Cultivation details

Requires a damp position[1]. Prefers a little light shade and a sheltered position[175].

Propagation

Seed - sow April to June in a cold frame. The seed usually germinates in 2 - 4 weeks at 18° c[175]. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the autumn.
The seed can also be sown in situ in late spring and thinned to 15cm apart.

The most comprehensive guide to edible plants I've come across. Only the briefest entry for each species, though, and some of the entries are more than a little dubious. Not for the casual reader.

A comprehensive but very terse guide. Not for the casual reader.

Very readable magazine with lots of information on propagation. A good article on Corydalis spp.
