Physical Characteristics

Perennial growing to 0.45m by 0.45m . It is hardy to zone 7 and is not frost tender. It is in flower from July to September, and the seeds ripen from August to September. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Bees, Lepidoptera (Moths & Butterflies) and insects. We rate it 2/5 for edibility and 1/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy) and medium (loamy) soils and requires well-drained soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.

Condiment; Leaves; Tea.

Edible leaves - used fresh or dried as a flavouring in cooked foods[5, 8, 12, 183] or fresh as a flavouring in salads[177].
A sweet and aromatic herb tea is made from the fresh leaves[183].

The plant is aromatic, astringent, cardiotonic, carminative, diaphoretic and expectorant[4, 145]. An infusion of the plant helps to overcome weak digestion[244].

Other Uses

Dye.

A yellow and a brown dye are obtained from the leaves[46, 61].

Cultivation details

Succeeds in almost any well-drained soil[1].

Propagation

Seed - sow spring in a cold frame. Only just cover the seed. Germination usually takes place within 2 weeks at 21°c. When large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse. Plant them out in the summer if they have made sufficient growth, otherwise plant them out in late spring or early summer of the following year.
Division in spring. Larger clumps can be replanted direct into their permanent positions, though it is best to pot up smaller clumps and grow them on in a cold frame until they are rooting well. Plant them out in the summer or following spring.
Cuttings of soft wood in May or June.
