Physical Characteristics

Perennial growing to 0.5m. . The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Wind. We rate it 2/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and requires well-drained soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils and can grow in saline soil. It cannot grow in the shade. It requires moist soil.

Root Sweetener.

Root- cooked[74]. The root is quite woody but it contains up to 30% sugar[74].

Cultivation details

We have very little information on this species and do not know if it will be hardy in Britain, though judging by its native range it could succeed outdoors in many parts of this country. The following notes are based on the general needs of the genus.
Succeeds in most soils but prefers a light neutral to alkaline soil.

Propagation

Seed - sow spring in a cold frame. Germination usually takes place within 2 - 3 weeks at 15° c. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out into their permanent positions in the summer.
If you have sufficient seed, it can be sown outdoors in situ in mid to late spring.
