Physical Characteristics

An evergreen perennial growing to 0.1m by 0.45m . It is hardy to zone 7. It is in leaf all year. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects. The plant is self-fertile. We rate it 1/5 for edibility and 0/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy) soils, requires well-drained soil and can grow in nutritionally poor soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It cannot grow in the shade. It requires dry or moist soil. The plant can tolerate maritime exposure.

Cultivation details

Requires a position in full sun in a well-drained gritty soil[200].
This species is hardy to at least -17° c[200].
Plants form dense cushions up to 45cm in diameter[69].
There is some confusion over the correct name for this species. Some books suggest that it should be called Bolax glebaria, though the new RHS Dictionary of Gardening shows them as two distinct species[200].

Propagation

Seed - we have no details for this species but suggest sowing the seed in late winter in a cold frame. Grow on for at least the first winter in a greenhouse or frame and plant out in late spring.
