Physical Characteristics

Perennial growing to 1.5m. It is hardy to zone 4. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects. The plant is self-fertile. We rate it 1/5 for edibility and 1/5 for medicinal use.

The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and requires well-drained soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.

Root.

One report says that the root is aromatic and suggests that it could be edible[177].

Antispasmodic Diaphoretic Diuretic Expectorant.

The plant is antispasmodic, diaphoretic, diuretic and expectorant[61]. It is used in the treatment of inflammation and irritability of the bladder[4], ague, pulmonary diseases, stomach complaints and nervous diseases[207].

Cultivation details

Succeeds in an ordinary well-drained but moisture retentive garden soil in sun or part shade[200].

Propagation

Seed - sow spring in a cold frame, only just covering the seed. When large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and plant them out in the summer.
Division in spring.
